CHIPS Has been monitoring various attacks related to COVID-19. Please be vigilant of the following scams:

Phishing emails
There are a variety of reports related to phishing emails, but tend to share a common theme. You might see emails stating that you need to download a file in order to get a coronavirus test or a checklist of safety measures. They can come from outside or inside the organization. The file will be malware.

Phone attacks
There are reports that people are being contacted and duped into buying a COVID-19 vaccine or testing kit. There is currently no vaccine for COVID-19

Physical attacks
There are reports that groups of individuals are dressing up in hazmat suits, asking to enter your residence or place of business to check for coronavirus. They then steal from the residence or place of business.

What to look out for

Phishing emails often share common characteristics that employees should always be aware of such as:

  • Sense of urgency! These emails will note “This needs to be done NOW, or else!”
  • Misspelled words and/or typos
  • Generic sender information; ‘payment processor’
  • Domain URL is not legitimate. There may be misspelling or a subdomain is used
  • Links. Never open a link if you are not expecting it as it may take you someplace harmful
