Looking Back on 2017

An Article By, Evan Leonard, President

With the ending of each year we like to take a moment and look back on the past year to reflect on what has happened in business and the world of technology and what will the new year bring. We have seen technology rapidly revolutionize everyday life and the disruption it is having on businesses. The fast pace of change is adding more stress to our lives because we are expected to make the right decisions in an area that is out of your expertise.  Even in the past few weeks, the financial news has been dominated by block chain and bitcoin. It is not the easiest concept to understand and it that something you need to know, should be investing, etc.

Giving Thanks This Season

An Article By, Evan Leonard, President

With Thanksgiving almost here, it is that time of year to reflect on our lives. I always reflect on family, self and business and concentrate on the positive things to be most thankful for.  As a technologist, the most fun about my job and the company is the new and emerging technology we get to interact with every day.  Thinking about the technology that contributes to making the world a better place in both my professional and personal life. If you take a look around, and really think about how technology is improving quality of life itself, you will be amazed. This year I am reflecting on the advantages of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning.   From the healthcare industry to preparing our taxes, computers are enhancing our lives.  Make no mistake, machines plus humans equal the best results.  Tackling Big Data and making better correlations among the data in order to diagnose or inform better decision making processes has improved dramatically in a very short period of time.

AI wave rolls through Microsoft’s language translation technologies

Used with Permission from Microsoft AI Blog: An Article By, John Roach

A fresh wave of artificial intelligence rolling through Microsoft’s language translation technologies is bringing more accurate speech recognition to more of the world’s languages and higher quality machine-powered translations to all 60 languages supported by Microsoft’s translation technologies.

The advances were announced at Microsoft Tech Summit Sydney in Australia on November 16th.

“We’ve got a complex machine, and we’re innovating on all fronts,” said Olivier Fontana, the director of product strategy for Microsoft Translator, a platform for text and speech translation services. As the wave spreads, he added, these machine translation tools are allowing more people to grow businesses, build relationships and experience different cultures.

Ask Amazon Alexa to find an Urgent Care Center or Emergency Room…Ask Northwell Health.

An Article By, Evan Leonard, President

With all the advancements in technology, one thing people still hate is the unknown of wasting time. How long is it going to take to get food, wait in line at DMV or an urgent care center? We are all demanding to be more efficient with our time. The technology is out there but it is our job to embrace it and make it work for us

Northwell Health is trying to service their customers better using Amazon Alexa. They realize and embrace the digital transformation wave that is happening right before or eyes. If you need to visit an Urgent Care Center or an Emergency Room, in many ways you feel as if you are in the Stone Age. Will you be waiting for an hour? Three hours? More? It can be frustrating especially when you’re in need of something as critical as medical services – when it might not be convenient or even safe for that matter to wait for an extended time.

How Microsoft is using machine reading comprehension to help create a ‘literate machine’

Used with Permission from Microsoft Next Blog: An Article By, Allison Linn

Microsoft is using machine reading to create a ‘literate machine’

If you asked most people, they’d probably say that computers and other gadgets are pretty good at communicating information to us, whether it’s by providing directions to an important business meeting or finding the best recipe for gluten-free apple pie.

A Fitbit, not an Apple Watch, was used in the Boston Red Sox cheating scandal

An Article By: Michael Sawh, Wearable.com

Remember the story from a few weeks ago that the Boston Red Sox used an Apple Watch to steal pitching signals from the Yankees? Well, it sounds like it was actually a Fitbit and not an Apple’s smartwatch at the centre of the cheating scandal.

That’s according to Nick Carfardo, baseball writer at the Boston Globe, who tweeted that a Major League source has revealed there was no Apple Watch involved in the Red Sox sign stealing. It was actually a Fitbit device.

Are you a Cyber Attack Target?

An Article By: David Tan, Chief Technology Officer

It seems you can’t go a day without hearing news of some huge cyber-attack on a large company or organization.  Everyone from Target to HBO has been the victim of malicious hackers looking to gain profit from some sort of unauthorized access to company data, assets, or resources.  Those are the stories you hear about – what about the ones you don’t?  What about the small businesses getting compromised every day and losing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, or losing the intellectual property that help differentiate their business?  HBO may look bad when they get hacked, Equifax might have to offer free credit monitoring to the whole country, but isolated cyber incidents are likely not going to put them out of business.  However, for the average small to mid-sized business, that type of an incident is unrecoverable.

Microsoft Overtakes Salesforce.com

An Article By: Wynand Roos, The CRM Team

Salesforce.com has led for decades. But things are now fading for them. Global agency Forrester recently put Microsoft ahead in Salesforce.com’s traditional stronghold: sales software[1]. This is a big coup for Microsoft who have been making gains in this area for a long time.

“Microsoft delivers on intelligent seller productivity.” – Forrester 2017 Q2 report

What should worry all Microsoft’s competitors: this latest Forrester Wave is based on Microsoft’s 2016 release. Wait until Forrester assesses Microsoft’s deep integration with LinkedIn – predicted to be a game-changer by many. The seamless flow between Outlook, Dynamics 365 and Sales Navigator (LinkedIn) is going to make it harder for Sales Directors to justify the higher expense of Oracle, SAP or Saleforce.com

Everything we’ve ever told you about passwords? Yeah, we were wrong!

An Article By: David Tan, Chief Technology Officer

Have you ever done anything that you really regretted?  I’m not talking about a little slip up or a minor faux pas.  I’m talking about the kind of mistake that has a long-ranging impact on a huge population of people.  If you have, then you know what it’s like to be Bill Burr, former midlevel manager at the National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST), and the author of “NIST Special Publication 800-63. Appendix A.”

OK, I’m sure you’re asking what “NIST Special Publication 800-63. Appendix A” is, and we should get that out of the way first.  That was an 8 page primer published in 2003 that advised people to protect their computer accounts by inventing awkward words using capital letters, numbers, and special characters.  That’s right, Bill Burr is the reason you’re going completely In$@n3! trying to remember all your crazy passwords!  Not since your mom told you not to leave the house with wet hair or you risk getting sick has such bad information perpetrated so deeply into commonly accepted truth. read more
